Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Bhutan Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk called on Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni

Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Bhutan Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk called on Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni today at State Guesthouse Padma. The Special Envoy apprised Dr. Dipu Moni of the preparation being made for the Summit. He informed that theme of this year’s Summit would be Climate Change. The Foreign Minister noted that some of the most climate vulnerable countries are in South Asia and collective regional action was needed to combat its adverse impact. 

 

During the meeting, the two ministers also discussed issues of bilateral interest. He observed that the recent visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has very well received in Bhutan and have generated greater enthusiasm among the people of his country. The Special Envoy also conveyed his government’s appreciation for Bangladesh’s decision to extend zero tariff access to 18 commodities from Bhutan and also allowing export through Tamabil border check post. This would greatly facilitate Bhutanese export from eastern part of the country to Bangladesh, he observed.  Following the meeting, the Special Envoy attended a luncheon hosted in his honour by Foreign Minister.

 

Yesterday, the Special Envoy called on the Hon’ble Prime Minister at her official residence Jamuna to hand over the letter from the Bhutanese Prime Minister to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inviting her to attend the 16th SAARC Summit to be held at Thimpu on 28-29 April, 2010.  For the first time Bhutan SAARC Summit is being held in Bhutan.
