ITU Secretary General Calls on Foreign Minister

Mr. Dr. Hamdoun Toure, secretary General, International Telecommunication Union called on Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu Moni today at office.
During the meeting they discussed the role of telecom in social development, Cyber Security, disaster management and climate change issues.
Dr. Dipu Moni informed the secretary general that Bangladesh is committed to the people for bridging the digital divide and achieving a Digital Bangladesh by 2021. She mentioned that the National ICT Policy adopted in 2009 sets out a clear direction in realizing this vision, and that the Government and other relevant entities are maximizing their efforts to implement the various short and medium term action plans outlined in the policy documented.
She said National ICT Policy 2009 attaches high priority to harnessing full potentials of the ICT opportunities to reduce disaster and Climate risk and vulnerabilities.
Foreign Minister Dr. Dipu informed that Bangladesh faces natural disasters frequently but the disaster management in Bangladesh has received international recognition due to coordinated efforts of government, non government and international agencies.
Mr. Dr. Hamdoun Toure, Secretary General is likely to request the government to host the proposed ‘Connect Asia Summit’ in 2011 like ‘Connect Africa Summit’ held in Rwanda in 2007.
Dr. Dipu Moni thanked the ITU for its continued policy and advisory support for developing the telecommunication sector in Bangladesh as well as its technical support to further strengthen radio-communication facilities.
