Dhaka, 17 May 2017: Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali MP conveyed Bangladesh’s concurrence when Ambassador of Finland to Bangladesh H.E. Nina Irmeli Vaskunlahti expressed interest of her Government to hold political consultations, at the level of Foreign Secretary, to further strengthen and expand Bangladesh – Finland bilateral relations.
The newly appointed Ambassador of Finland, who is based in New Delhi and concurrently accredited to Bangladesh, presented her credentials to President Md. Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban yesterday. Ambassador Vaskunlahti praised Bangladesh’s economic growth as “mesmerizing.” Terming Bangladesh-Finland relations “good”, she further opined that both sides need to put more substance in the relations, particularly by pursuing more engagements to enhance trade and investment between the two countries. She also said that she would continue to work to make Finland ‘visible’ to Bangladesh.
Foreign Minister Ali expressed satisfaction at the collaboration between the Finnish company “Wartsila”, which manufactures equipment for power sector, and the local Summit Group for generation of much needed electricity for the fastest growing economy of Bangladesh. Foreign Minister said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina realized this need early in her first term (1996-2001) and opened up power sector for private investment.
Foreign Minister Ali expressed regret that he couldn’t undertake a visit to Finland during his four-country Nordic tour (Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden) in September 2016, but hoped to do so in the near future. Ambassador of Finland conveyed the invitation of her Foreign Minister to Minister Ali to visit Finland.
